Meet Sean E. Manley

From the family vegetable farm, to commercial livestock management, to more than a decade in organic certification.

Rooted in agriculture

Raised on a small veggie farm

Sean was raised on a small vegetable farm in Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. Around the start of high school he began helping neighbouring farms with their cropping and, eventually, their livestock husbandry.

After a long time not knowing what to study, he chose a Bachelor of Science (Agr) at the University of Guelph. His interest in commercial livestock production led him to major in Animal Science.

Sean has worked in the organic and certification sector since 2012, with both the COR and NOP programs. He has inspected and audited producer and processor operations under both, reviewed certification files and made certification decisions.

The path to SEM Service & Solution

  1. Growing up on the farm

    Raised on a small vegetable farm in Northumberland County, helping neighbouring farms with cropping and livestock husbandry from high school on.

  2. BSc (Agr), University of Guelph

    Bachelor of Science (Agr) with a major in Animal Science, driven by an interest in commercial livestock production.

  3. Commercial livestock management

    Years of full-time work in the barn: managing a 65-cow tie-stall dairy herd, farrowing room manager in a 1,200-sow farrowing unit, managing a contract finishing loop, and gilt multiplication for a swine breeding stock company.

  4. Insurance broker

    A few years in insurance before finding his way back to agriculture.

  5. Canadian Certification Body, 2012 onward

    Inspecting and auditing producers and processors under COR and NOP, reviewing certification files and making certification decisions. His IT background built knowledge of certification management software and data manipulation.

  6. Expanding into food safety & animal welfare

    More recently, he added auditing for CanadaGAP food safety and poultry animal welfare.

  7. SEM Service + Solution

    Now self-employed and focused on consulting: helping producers and processors get certified in organic programs and the CanadaGAP food safety program.

Sean keeps growing his education and knowledge across a wider range of programs.

An IT background brings know-how in certification management software and working with data.

Based in Newmarket, ON

Central to many operations in Ontario, and willing to travel as required.
